Lithuania is the largest and southernmost of the three Baltic republics and borders the Baltic Sea in the West. With nearly 65,300 square kilometre, the country has 200 nature reserves. Miles of sandy beaches, picturesque lakes, rolling hills and wide plains characterise the geographic profile of the country. Culture lovers will get their money´s worth in the baroque city centre of the capital, Vilnius. Spectacular architecture, a rich eccliastical history and shadows of past German and Russian influence dominate the cityscape. Lithuania has been a member of the European Union since 2004. More than a quarter is covered by forests, and with its Mediterranean flair Lithauania attracts more and more tourists by the year. Most of the roughly 3.3 million population speak Lithuanian. In some areas Polish, Russian and Belarusian is also spoken, partly in a hybrid form.
